US presidential election 2008
The USA went to polls on the
4th of November 2008 to elect its
44th President. This was going to
be a historic election in the history
of United States of America
since it became independent
from the Great Britain on July 4,
1776 and George Washington
became its first president in 1789.
It was the first time in the history
of USA that a black was nominated
by a main political party to
fight for president’s chair. It indicated
that the change is coming
to America
Let us first examine the parliament of the US and how USA chooses its president. The US Congress The parliament of US is called Congress which under the Article 1 of the US Constitution has the legislative power. The US Congress consists of the House of Representative and the Senate. The House of Representative The House of Representatives is the lower house which is composed of members chosen every second year by the people of several states. A legislature should not be less than 25 years of age. The House of Representatives has 435 members, with the number representing each state decided according to population size. The senate The Senate of the United States is the upper house which is composed of Senators from each state, chosen by the legislature thereof, for six years. One third of the Senate will be chosen every second year. No person can be a Senator who has not attained to the age of thirty years. The Senate is based on equal representation, with each state supplying two of the 100 members, and each has a six-year term. Thus each state has 2 senators in the house.
