LEARNING ENTREPRENEURSHIP @ DBS
Entrepreneurship is taken as solely the establishment of new businesses, but there is much more to it than knowing how to start up a new company. Entrepreneurship can be extended to already established businesses as well, that need assistance in keeping sales going, finding new markets, advertising and generally staying successful in today’s highly competitive markets.
Interview Excerpts
RUPA VASUDEVAN
Director, MSB Mumbai
by Utpala Ghosh
MBA’s have always been favourite with recruiters. Why?

Satisfaction with MBA employees and the skills they bring to the company remain high. Almost all employers report satisfaction with their MBA employees, including 76% who are very or extremely satisfied.
The majority of employers report that compared with other employees at the same job level, employees with an MBA degree demonstrate higher or much higher abilities in managing strategy and innovation, strategic and system skills, knowledge of general business functions and managing decision-making processes.

How is MBA different or better than any other technical or professional course?
Well it is not fair to compare the two different streams but still if you ask me I will say the reason is simple: being CEO is about vision and leadership. This would require you – at times—to take a leap of faith, even when the numbers are against you but there is a game plan and eventually it pays off. MBAs are exposed to all aspects of the business – their role is to take a bird’s eye view of the organization. The mobility into general management and consulting that comes with an MBA is missing in the other professional courses. Overall, it appears that MBAs score when it comes to communication skills, presentation and customer orientation.

How much is a B-schools brand identity in the market important in getting their students placed?
It’s important that a B- School brand be focused enough to represent its true value to the market but flexible enough to grow with the school as the market changes. A business school brand takes into account its hopes for the future. It should describe not only who you are, but what you aspire to be. Increased attention to business school branding has led to much soul-searching within the administrations and faculty of individual schools. Branding is an art and it goes far beyond the product portfolio and embrace the whole offering from the business school, including products, people, price/value and place .

What do you think is the criteria for the employers while choosing a B School for fresh recruitment of their company?
The most popular selection criteria for choosing a business school are international reputation and career placement record, though return on investment are important too. MSB has been slowly and steadily making an influence nationally and I am sure very soon it will be able to achieve the international recognition as well.

Do you agree that the best recruiters always go to the topmost B schools? If so, why do you think so?
No I do not agree as the students from our college have been able to get placed in many of the world renowned organizations at a very good pay package. In my opinion all that matters is the amount of knowledge and the level of confidence that have been inculcated in a student which helps a candidate to achieve the goal and touch the sky. Many employers prefer to hire MBAs who they feel are more equipped to provide insight and analysis in a better way irrespective of which institute they come from.

Can you share with us your experience of placing your first batch of students? Please explain how has the scenario improved for your institute over the time?
Although Placement 2010 had thrown new challenges, we achieved an average salary package of 11 lacs as against a salary package of 6 lacs last year due to the efforts of entire placement team and faculty members who used up all their resources & contacts to ensure 100% placements. Multiple offers were made to students which also made them more selective. Factors like stability of the organization and how they behaved in tough times were important determinants while making their choices. Our B school also created incubation center for entrepreneurship development which encouraged many students to become new age entrepreneur. Our emphasis was more on career planning and guidance services and not pure placement services, which is an acute, unfulfilled need even in the best of business schools in India.

To Sum up, MSB feels that Placement 2010 was a great year. We gave students many Organizations providing good work experience platform and stability.
